Many recurring tasks are not tasks I want to work on immediately when they become due.
Instead of automatically creating tasks on a specific date, I would like recurring tasks to behave as templates.
Workflow:
- A recurring task template becomes Available based on its recurrence rule.
- Available templates are shown in a separate “Repeating Tasks” list.
- During planning, I manually choose which available templates should be scheduled.
- Scheduling creates a normal task in Today, Upcoming, or another planning view.
- Completing the scheduled task updates the recurring template and calculates its next availability date.
Example:
- Clean refrigerator (every 3 months)
- Last completed: March 1
- Available: June 1
- Appears in Repeating Tasks list
- I manually schedule it for June 8
- After completion on June 8, the next availability becomes September 8
This creates a workflow of:
Available → Plan → Execute
rather than:
Automatically scheduled → Overwhelmed by due tasks
